Hump Day Update 4/11/18

By Rachel A.G. Gilman, Staff Writer

Welcome back to Hump Day Update, the place to find out everything you need to know about what’s been going on in the entertainment world for the week. I’m Rachel A.G. Gilman. But enough about me, let’s get to the news.

Cardi B prepared us for bigger news sometime this week when she released her album, but I’m not sure if we knew that this was going to be her announcing her pregnancy during her “Saturday Night Life” performance, or maybe we did because it’s been a rumor all over the internet for a while that Cardi tried to say was just her getting fat. I mean, to be fair, you do get a little fat when you’re growing a human.

All of my prayers have been answered because I finally get to discuss “Wheel of Fortune” in this column! In what should have been a $7,000 win for a contestant on the show turned into nothing after Jonny accidentally said “Flamingo Dance Lessons” rather than “Flamenco Dance Lessons.” If anyone in his neighborhood is up for flooding his large with plastic versions of these pink birds, he might have a good laugh, or at least know how to say it.

You inevitably saw that Lorde was in New York City this past week after at least one of your friends went to the concert and blew up your timeline with photo and video. She brought Jack Antonoff up on stage with her to cover a song from St. Vincent, and of course to make everyone love her even more and buy one of those ridiculous “supercut” t-shirts I then saw all over campus.

“Late Night” host Seth Meyers announced on his show Monday evening that his wife gave birth to their second child in the lobby of their apartment building, showing photos of the couple with EMTs who were called to the scene and their new son, Axel. The New York Fire Department was there, too, making it the event of the week for Manhattan’s elite.

A$AP Rocky revealed in his newly released single this week that him and his boo make out to Frank Ocean. A little too much information but thanks for sharing, bro…

Controversy arose on “The Simpsons” this week after last year’s documentary criticizing the series’ use of Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, an Indian character who owns a Kwik-E Mart. Essentially, the writers told us not to “have a cow” over our insistence on politically correct culture…and did so by having an Indian man make the comment. I’d rather they have used the old trope, “If you haven’t got anything nice to say then don’t say anything at all.”

Kesha released a new music video this week where she marries a lesbian couple in a totally fabulous wedding, and also proves to us that music videos are just an excuse to do cool things we wouldn’t otherwise get the opportunity to do.

On “Grey’s Anatomy,” there was trouble in paradise for Maggie and Jackson after other doctors in the hospital all seemed to be making some pretty big emotional and professional strides with their work. I mean, they had to know this wasn’t going to go well. They’re technically step-siblings and they always tell you not to get into things that are too close to home.

Normani, formerly of Fifth Harmony, sent love to her former girl groupies in anticipation of the release of her debut solo album, which sounds less like a truthful happiness and more like a publicity stunt. Oh, the complexity of famous friendships.

And finally, Darren Criss and Lea Michelle announced this week on an appearance on “Ellen” that they will be reuniting for a tour where they will perform Broadway classics, their own original tunes, and yes, indeed, some music from their days singing and dancing together on “Glee.” I think this also proves to us that hell is a place on earth and will be coming to an arena near you starting May 30 (seriously, who is the demographic for this?).

Hope you enjoyed this week! See you back here next week. It’s not interesting to talk about the weather anymore so maybe not acknowledging its rebellious period will make it go back to normal.
