Welcome back to Hump Day Update, the place to find out everything you need to know about what’s been going on in the entertainment world for the week. I’m Rachel A.G. Gilman. But enough about me, let’s get to the news.
We finally found out this week on NBC’s “This Is Us” how beloved character Jack dies, involving a fire and massive smoke inhalation. The actors all spoke about how hard it was to keep the secret, sharing that the code word for the situation was “marbles.” Feels appropriate since everyone lost theirs over the loss. Reminder, Jack is not a real person and not worth drowning your tears in ice cream.
Cashmere Cat, Major Lazer, and Tory Lanez (I hope you know at least one more of those people than I do) put out what is being dubbed one of the best music videos to take place in an ice rink for their song “Miss You.” Considering that is a list that only includes the songs from the soundtrack to the Disney movie “Ice Princess,” not sure if it’s a plus but it does feature Diplo on a Zamboni for your entertainment pleasure.
Lifetime is making a movie about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s love story and have just cast the actors who will play their lookalikes in the flick, much in the spirit of what they did for Harry’s older brother. My big question is whether or not they will find any matching suit ensembles to pair them in for the best double entendre ever.
The film “Black Panther” is set to be released soon, and to continue my discussion about film soundtracks, this one is going to be produced and curated by Kendrick Lamar, which was a dream for the whole team involved. Maybe this album will take home a Grammy next year, unless of course Bruno Mars gets his nose involved with the “Wonder Woman” sequel or something.
Ryan Murphy has been commissioned by Netflix to produce a political musical comedy entitled, “The Politician,” winning a major bidding war for the project. However, it’s Ryan Murphy, so we know that in between the singing, dancing, and scheming, someone will probably also be dying or hitting the drugs too heavily backstage, so get prepared for that later this year!
In more music video news, Paramore released their video for the single “Rose-Colored Boy” this week, where the band dress up as a super cheesy news team and give us only the good headlines. They must live in another dimension because the song is longer than the ten seconds it takes to deliver our realistic happy headlines.
After the months and months of rumors, Kylie Jenner finally confirmed this weekend that she was, indeed, pregnant, and gave birth to a baby girl earlier this month, so the spin-off series featuring the Kardashian Klan’s offspring is probably already in the works. Ryan Seacrest can already hear the cash rolling right in.
Noah Cyrus released her new single “We Are…” which is coming off her soon to be released album “NC-17,” meaning we could be seeing another of the outrageous phases like we saw from Miley. Hopefully the music is just as good, too (and maybe includes some twerking?).
And finally, the biggest day for commercials of the entire year, the Super Bowl, aired this past weekend, where Tom Brady had to go home without another over-the-top ring and fans in Philly destroyed their city like any loving person would, but in between the world got to see Justin Timberlake’s long-awaited concert, involving a lot of dancing, not a heck of a lot of singing, and a suit that featured the great outdoors. People are saying it’s time to give him a break, but until we stop talking about P!nk’s cough drop (and acknowledging the fact she killed the national anthem while having the flu), I’m not going to stop enjoying the memes. Neither should you!
Hope you enjoyed this week! See you back here again next Wednesday. It’s supposed to snow but not enough to cancel classes, so you might as well accept that winter is never ending, NYU!
