Welcome back to Hump Day Update, the place to find out everything you need to know about what’s been going on in the entertainment world for the week. I’m Rachel A.G. Gilman. But enough about me, let’s get to the news.
P!nk performed at the Grammy’s this weekend and then released the simplistic video for her song “Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken,” featuring her daughter. P!nk’s mini me looks pretty happy (unlike Blue Ivy, who was not down for Beyoncé’s clapping and is apparently the only person who can tell Queen B what to do).
My man Stephen Colbert has been busy, creating the new Showtime program, “Our Cartoon President,” which stars the animated version of Donald Trump with his thoughts on how the state of the country is looking. Sad thing is, this little doodle probably has bigger hands and better qualifications to do the job than the actual person.
Drake did not show up to the Grammy’s this weekend, but he is ruling the charts with his single “God’s Plan,” which came in at the Number 1 spot and even beat Taylor Swift’s record for the most single streams in a day in the United States with 4.3 million. I mean, saying that it was fate sounds a little heavy handed, does it not?
There are conversations that “Grey’s Anatomy” might be killing off Dr. Bailey sometime between now and the end of the season. We’ve already had planes, cars, and bombs be the reason for the deaths of our favorites, so I guess it’s about time Shonda worked a train into the mix (otherwise I’ll be disappointed).
Liam Payne and Rita Ora hang out in a hot mansion in their new song “For You,” where the two meet up for a connection of sorts. Sure, it looks sexy and all, but I’d rather a guy just meet me at the bookstore and pay for my course materials at this point in my exceedingly boring life.
Will Ferrell returned to “Saturday Night Live” this week in the role of host, taking over the opening segment dressed up as his former Presidential alter-ego, George W. Bush, but the internet responded to the whole thing with major disappointment that he did not reprise his role on Celebrity Jeopardy as host, Alex Trebec. And the answer: what is a major oversight on the writers’ parts?
Lady Gaga is still working with her material from the album “Joanne,” and is revisiting the song in a depressing, piano-version, where the waterworks will inevitably hit you. This woman can make us cry, dance, and understand the art of wearing everything from feathers to eggs to meat, but maybe don’t try all at the same time (know you’re limits).
“The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” continued this week with Darren Criss in the role of the murderer of the notorious fashion mogul. However, if you’re still having trouble separating this guy from his usual song and dance routines, know you’re not alone in the struggle.
And finally, once more, the Grammy Awards were this weekend, and you know what that means: stars trying to promote the cause that women matter in the arts, too, even if the recording academy isn’t going to do anything to show that they agree with that. White roses might have adorned jackets but very few golden trophies were in the arms of the ladies, or pretty much anyone other than Bruno Mars. I’d make a joke about him having “Finesse,” but seriously, did anyone even listen to “24K Magic” all the way through, since it came out almost two years ago…?
Hope you enjoyed this week! See you back here again next Wednesday. Stay warm beneath all those layers out there in the cold, NYU.
