Hump Day Update 11/1/17

By Rachel A.G. Gilman, Staff Writer

Welcome back to Hump Day Update, the place to find out everything you need to know about what’s been going on in the entertainment world for the week. I’m Rachel A.G. Gilman. But enough about me, let’s get to the news.

Netflix is talking about creating a “House of Cards” spin-off, or in other words, are looking for anything to distract from the scandal revolving around the show’s star, Kevin Spacey, who came out at gay this week while addressing accusations of sexual assault. If they figure out how to pull attention away from a problematic president, they should let the rest of the country know.

Sam Smith has released his “most personal song yet” with “Burning,” a ballad that will surely get your eyes tearing up as he croons over not handling a split very well, so if you’re getting dumped during what is traditionally engagement season, at least you’ll have a new song for your playlist.

“Jane the Virgin” has been writing a novel, and fans will soon be able to read the book in real life, so I guess I’ve learned that the way for me to get published is to turn my life into an even crazier television show, become a writer in that, and then get a book deal. Sounds just as possible as the traditional route.

Taylor Swift released the new music video for her song “…Ready For It?” which featured her battling herself as a cyborg and as a demon in a world where shooting lightning from your fingertips is a totally legitimate superpower. If you ever wondering if there was an answer to the question, “When does having too much money yield too much creativity?” I think we’ve hit the nail on the head.

NBC’s “The Today Show” decided to dress up in country music themed costumes this year for Halloween, which led to the delights (or nightmares) or seeing Matt Lauer as Dolly Parton and Hoda Kotb as her celebrity crush, Blake Shelton. I thought they said you could stop having to embarrass yourself after high school.

It was announced this week that Drake had not submitted his most recent album, “More Life,” to the Grammys for consideration this year, claiming his music didn’t fit into the categories and he was a little over the whole event. I guess he’s got enough fans hitting up his hotline bling to make another golden trophy not really that important.

“Dancing With the Stars” took on Halloween this week and things got extra scary when there were two couples eliminated instead of one, sending both Nikki Bella and Vanessa Lachey were given the boot this week. That’s frightful, but the real horror is that Frankie Muniz and the less talented twin from “Property Brothers” are still scooting their boots across the dance floor – America, what are you thinking?

Demi Lovato announced that she is going to be going to tour in 2018 and bringing DJ Khaled along for the ride with her. That’s cool and all, but the real question is whether or not she’s bringing his son, Asahd, along for the ride, because that baby is more famous that most of us can ever hope of being.

And finally, SNL went animated this weekend with the David S Pumpkins special broadcasting in their usual slot, telling you the backstory of Tom Hanks’s supposedly spooky character as he helped to rescue candy from mean, preteen boys to give it back to the children of the town while riding around in a car that looked like a strawberry. If your head hurts from confusion, you’re not alone, but maybe the writers were just trying to recreate the feeling of a Halloweekend hangover.

Hope you enjoyed this week! See you back here again next Wednesday. Hope you had fun getting your tricks and treats.
