Welcome to Hump Day Update, the place to find out everything you need to know about what’s been going on in the entertainment world for the week. I’m Rachel A.G. Gilman. But enough about me, let’s get to the news.
The Grammy nominations were announced this week and Beyonce and Adele are at the top of the nominations list. It’s good to see that the lifelong work of some women is being acknowledged to some degree and not being disregarded for men that just came onto the field, not that that resembled anything else in our culture…
In more award show news, the host of the 2017 Oscars was announced this week and it will be Jimmy Kimmel following his success with the Emmys this past year. This only leaves one question in my mind: if Fallon and Kimmel now have their awards shows all lined up, does this mean that all that’s left for my late-night crush, Stephen Colbert, is the awards for college media? And if so, can I attend?
Niall Horan is going to be releasing his full-length album at some point in the upcoming future, which he informed his fans via a handwritten letter that he posted on his website, before admitting that he is going to “disappear off the face of the earth” for a while before the album comes out in February. So basically like every other guy in the world, he likes us, but he doesn’t like us enough to hang out all of the time — but at least he tells us.
In Netflix’s (yes, I finally got Netflix!) “Fuller House,” DJ’s heart is still up for grabs as they get ready to start the second season. She’s left to decide between her high school sweetheart, Steve, and Matt, her new business partner. Just goes to show you that things don’t get any less complicated just because we get older, so give up hope now.
“Nashville” is also about to make its comeback to the small screen on CMT and people are questioning whether or not the show will address the issues of anti-LGBT laws being passed in the state of Tennessee. Probably just like everything else in the world of country music, the show will move past it like it’s not happening and continue singing about drinking beer in the sand.
Jaden Smith has a new video out for his song “Fallen” which is apparently his version of the popular show “West World” where he aesthetically vomits on everything, also known as being given too much money to produce something and running out of good ideas.
ABC’s “Designated Survivor” is getting a new showrunner as Jeff Melvoin replaces Jon Harmon Feldman. It just goes to show that people don’t even want to be involved in controlling a television program about what happens when an unqualified man takes over as president and the country becomes a mess.
Lady Gaga is looking for her fans to join her at the Super Bowl this year at her Halftime performance, so for all of you who are looking for a way to connect with your athletic-minded father, this might finally be your chance for some bonding!
And finally, “Saturday Night Live” continued to mock President-elect Donald Trump this week which he once again responded to by calling the show “unwatchable.” Obviously, Lorne Michaels and the gang aren’t taking the criticism to heart, but maybe they should. After all, pretty much every season of “The Apprentice” has been filled with laughs.
Hope you enjoyed reading this entire semester of Hump Day Update as much as I have enjoyed writing it. We’ll see you back here after the winter break. Stay warm, NYU!
