Welcome to Hump Day Update, the place to find out everything you need to know about what’s been going on in the entertainment world for the week. I’m Rachel A.G. Gilman. But enough about me, let’s get to the news.
ABC announced the cast of the next round of “Dancing With the Stars” this week, and in addition to the Hough siblings giving up their struggling acting careers to return to the show as professionals, two Olympians will be joining the cast – one of which is Ryan Lochte. (I really hope it was part of his consequences for the Rio stunts.)
The music world has been a buzz this week as Drake revealed his long-time crush on Rihanna and broke a million young ladies’ hearts. Well, at least everyone knows now what Drake’s looking for in a lady and can get to “work” on making his dreams come true.
Freeform’s “The Fosters” had its summer finale this week and pretty much every topic under the sun was touched on: someone cheating to get into college, dreams crushed, break-ups, lost jobs, fights, drug abuse, you name it! Anyone else think the writers on these programs have bets on how many issues they can cover per episode, regardless of how much it messes up their characters?
Rebecca Black is still trying to move beyond singing about days of the week (“Friday” and “Saturday” are in the past, people) and is out with a new single this week, “The Great Divide,” which actually comes in two versions: an acoustic one, and one that is more EDM-inspired. Nothing says you’re making a comeback and have found your sound like releasing two opposite-sounding singles.
This summer, most of you have probably been watching “Stranger Things” on Netflix, but commotion has occurred because the subscription service hasn’t renewed the series for a second season. Is it possible this is the end? Well, stranger things have happened before in the world of television.
The latest Disney Channel star to turn musician and ditch the Mickey Mouse ears is Bridgit Mendler, who just released her sexy single “Atlantis.” It’s a far departure from the bubble-gum pop of her past. I’m almost positive at this point that if you’re a Disney darling, than your contract says you will have a period of becoming an “adult” that also comes with an unnecessary explanation behind your music.
On this week’s episode of “Fear the Walking Dead,” the character Alejandro was apparently bitten by a zombie and showed no side effects from such, leading the community to question if the series is changing up the rules of how zombies work in general. Whatever the case, just allow the Gallatin class “Zombie 101” know before the semester starts.
Move over, Calvin Harris and David Guetta, because DJ Flamingosis has released his first full-length album, “Bright Moments,” that is awash in throwback tunes and making a buzz. The music video for the song “Pleasure Palette” does have a nice shot of Flamingosis drinking coconut water, and we all know product placement is key for a successful music career.
And finally, the VMAs invaded Madison Square Garden before the newest class of NYU freshman did this past weekend. We had Kanye West rambling in a speech, Britney Spears performing but doing nothing very interesting, while Beyoncé was as fierce as ever. The ratings for the show were historically low for the award show, probably because it seems as if the same stuff happens every year at these things. In the words of Green Day, wake us up when something interesting happens.
Hope you enjoyed this week! See you back here next Wednesday. And welcome, NYU 2020, to this crazy family!
