Shonda Rhimes might have finally met her match. Joshua Safran, a Tisch graduate with a B.A. in playwriting, previously recognized for his work on “Gossip Girl” created “Quantico,” a new thriller that revolves around a terrorist attack in New York City. The show is sure to become a fast phenomenon—two episodes in, and it shows no signs of slowing down.

Priyanka Chopra stars in as lead as a FBI agent, with multiple powerful and complex females supporting the cast, from the head of the FBI training base to a pair of twins pretending to be one mysterious woman. “Quantico” is Chopra’s debut on American television after becoming one of the most popular actresses in the Hindu film industry for over a decade, after being crowned Miss World in 2000.

The thrills, twists, and turns of the show are reminiscent of Shonda Rhimes’ pilots. The show opens with Chopra’s character Alex Parrish lying unconscious in the remains of Grand Central. A flashback introductions reveals the lives of multiple new FBI recruits, setting up multiple characters and story lines and the possible bomber.

To discover the suspect, the FBI, believing this to be an inside job, asks Parrish to recall her time at Quantico. The second episode, rather than answering questions, only creates more suspects while presenting the increasingly secretive behavior of the characters. Parrish soon realizes she is the prime suspect and escapes the agents and works to find the true terrorist. This brilliant use of dramatic suspense is what keeps audiences guessing.

While new dramas may abound, “Quantico” stands out for its sharp writing. It creates complex, multifaceted characters and reveals just enough per episode to satisfy for the expected week, leaving enough to the imagination to continue to be a presence in the viewers minds so they must come back.

Told in flashbacks, “Quantico” perfectly sets up both the histories of these characters and hint at foreboding tendencies, allowing questions to ponder and discuss in the weeks ahead. This fast-paced new drama is shocking from episode to episode. A show so gripping so early in its run is a rare find, ABC is sure to have a new Sunday night obsession on its hands.

“Quantico” airs on ABC Sunday nights at 10 p.m.
