With only a few episodes left until the season finale, “Supernatural” finally returns to the season’s main story arc, the Leviathans. The episode follows the Winchester brothers as they team up with quirky hacker Charlie, played by yet another “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” alumni, Felicia Day, to obtain vital information from the Leviathan boss, Dick Norman. The episode pays homage to classic espionage/heist films, complete with split screens and heart-stopping music.
The brothers’ mentor, Bobby, returns in ghost form to disclose the Leviathans’ final plan. They will use a genetically altered medicine to “cure” all human diseases, but this medicine also slowly turns humans into fat, complacent meat for the Leviathans. Bobby tells the disgusted hunters that the Leviathans want to “farm” all humans.
The brothers are then introduced to Charlie, a brilliant, geeky hacker who just happens to work for Dick Norman. After seeing her superior literally ripped to threads by a Leviathan, she decides to help the brothers. Since the Winchesters are on the Leviathans’ most wanted list, they unwillingly send Charlie in to infiltrate the company and hack into Norman’s email.
Charlie successfully carries out the operation, and the brothers discover that Norman has been launching archeological digs in search of an ancient artifact. In the nick of time, the Winchesters arrive at the airport and steal the artifact, which turns out to be a huge block with obscure engravings on it.
Though Bobby proves to be just as helpful as when he was alive, the brothers are worried that when he meets Norman, the creature that killed him, he will lose all sense of humanity and turn into a vengeful spirit. Believing that he has his anger in control, Bobby accompanies Charlie on the operation to protect her. When she is trapped in the company, Bobby manages to fend off Dick Norman, but his rage temporarily emerges when he attacks his nemesis, slightly wounding Charlie in the process.
“The Girl with the Dungeons and Dragon Tattoo” was very enjoyable and exciting. Since the season is coming to an end, it’s good to see that the writers are turning their attention back to the Leviathans. Felicia Day was both hilarious and fun to watch as Charlie, who Dean describes as the “little sister he never wanted.” Many unanswered questions remain. What is the artifact? If Bobby does turn, will the brothers have to exorcise him? Regardless of the answers, it is great to see the series in full momentum in preparation for the finale.
